Is MTV gearing up to reboot The Hills? It’s looking like that may be the case. Today, People reported that the cast of the long-running reality series will be reuniting at the MTV Video Music Awards for a “big announcement,” and considering that The Hills ended 8 years ago, the cast has nothing to announce other than a revival series. There’s been a lot of talk over the years about a reboot, but the promise of a “big announcement” seems like legitimate proof that Spencer and Heidi (and their crystals) will be returning to TV in the near future.
Back in June, Kristin Cavallari told People that she’s interested in a reboot, but only if the show’s villains, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag, return, as well. “I was about to sign a deal to do a Hills reunion with E!, and then Heidi and Spencer signed a deal with MTV,” she said. Kristin didn’t specify which cast members she had recruited to join the E! reunion, but we have to imagine that the group did not include Lauren Conrad, who left the show in Season 5, right as Kristin joined the cast. “They’re such a vital part of The Hills that we couldn’t do it without them,” Kristin said about Heidi and Spencer. “So, it’s been kind of put on hold, but I would love to do it.”
Have Kristin, Heidi, and Spencer joined forces to make this happen? Speidi just had a baby, and we can’t imagine that they’d turn down an MTV-sized payday or a second shot at fame (they have a podcast called Make Speidi Famous Again, for god’s sake). Kristin has her own reality show on E!, Very Cavallari, and it wouldn’t be surprising if she finagled her way into a producer credit for the potential Hills revival. Essentially, bringing back The Hills is a win-win-win for everyone involved: Speidi convinces people to pay attention to them again, Kristen gets to “write her own narrative,” or something like that, and MTV makes a boatload of money.
The VMAs air Monday night at 8 pm, so if you’re a die hard Hills fan, be sure to tune in to see the cast’s big red carpet announcement.
