If Riverdale has taught us anything — and it’s taught us a LOT of things, from cheerleading choreography to the dangers of starting vigilante gangs with your high-school buddies — it’s that we live in uncertain times. Our civic leaders change, the wealthy industrialists looking to buys up local businesses swap loyalties on a whim, high schoolers are joining motorcycle gangs regardless of their own personality traits. It’s a relief when you can find something to trust and believe in. So when Riverdale ended its second season last week (May 16), we all had to believe that the Netflix release was coming soon. Until then, we could only wait.
Well, after merely a week that wait is over. If you’re wondering “what time will Riverdale be on Netflix?” the answer is… Right now! Riverdale season 2 is up and streaming on Netflix! Yeah! All 22 episodes of a season that began, in case you forgot, with Fred Andrews (Luke Perry) getting shot up at Pop’s diner and Penelope Blossom laid up with burns over most of her body, are now available for your streaming pleasure.
Riverdale follows the comic-book-inspired adventures of Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), the dumbest boy on Earth, whose good looks and charisma make him irresistible to both cheerleaders and their mobbed-up fathers alike. Organized crime was a major theme of this season, from biker gangs and the bajillion rules in their code of honor, to the more mafia-style criminal dealings of Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos, delivering TV’s shortest and most menacing antagonist).
As in its first season, the chief export in Riverdale is … okay, it’s maple syrup, but its second-biggest export is complete lunacy. And this season was packed with masked murderers and hilariously-named criminal figures. Sure, the mystery of the Black Hood killer (and then … who was the other Black Hood) was the season’s strongest through-line, but who could forget such indelible figures as the Sugarman or his friendly neighbor to the north, Papa Poutine.
By the way, if you haven’t watched the season yet, boy are you in for a bevy of food related characters (hey there, Sweet Pea)!
The season also included a stand-out musical episode that has to be seen to be believed. And ***spoilers here*** one of the best LGBTQ+ romances on TV, between Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) and Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan). Fans were aching for more by the end of the season, but the scant moments we got between #Choni were some of the best the show had to offer.
Oh, and of course for your Bughead fans (that would be Betty and Jughead), and Varchie fans (that would be Veronica and Archie), there was a lot of kissing. And a lot of sex. Lots.
So whether you’re looking to revisit the murder-happy town of Riverdale, or checking out a second season that said, “instead of one murder, what if there were so many murders,” then you have the next day or so planned out for you.
