Below are some of the best shows currently on Netflix that are mature and entertaining without diving into sexy territory. This doesn’t mean that all of these shows are kid-appropriate. Every parent has a different guideline about what is and isn’t acceptable for their darlings. But if you’re hanging out with some adults but don’t feel like toeing the line of adult entertainment, this list has your back.
'The Good Place'
What’s the least sexy school subject after math? Philosophy. That’s basically the only thing this trippy and insanely smart NBC comedy is about. Created by Michael Shur (Parks and Recreation) and starring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson, this comedy will leave you laughing out loud and eagerly pressing play on the next episode. It even covers up its cursing with strategic uses of “fork” and “shirt.” If you’re looking for something that’s brilliant but parent-friendly, this is an excellent option.
'The Great British Baking Show'
Looking for all the drama of Game of Thrones but with the genuine heart and unconditional support of your grandmother? That’s what this baking show delivers. After watching one episode, you and your family will be arguing about swiss roll preparation and fretting over oven times. And if this British competition show ever feels too wholesome, be sure to check out Netflix’s sassy alternative for bad bakers, Nailed It.
'Lost in Space'
With this sci-fi thriller, Netflix has made an adventure epic that can be enjoyed by all ages. Lost in Space isn’t exactly a kids’ show. It’s more like solid drama that devoid of hyper-sexual and hyper-violent scenes. There’s still a good amount of cursing, so heads up.
'The Office'
Apart from those “That’s what she said” jokes and the stray hookup, The Office is about a clean as you can get. It’s right there in the title! Almost everything in this classic sitcom happens in an office, and few things are less sexy than a paper sales office. The best part about this watch is that all nine seasons are on Netflix, which means you have over 200 episodes to binge.
'Planet Earth II'
There are few things more dramatic and family friendly than nature, and there are few nature documentaries better than the Planet Earth series. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, this nature series combines some of the most extraordinary footage of our planet with shocking stories about species you’ve never even heard of. It’s a great background watch that will teach you something too.
'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt'
Much like the Tina Fey show that came before it, 30 Rock, this fem-powered comedy excels at being laugh-out-loud funny without relying too heavily on sex, violence, or cursing. It’s the absurd magic of Fey. Throw it on and share the gift of Titus with more people.
'Person of Interest'
Looking for something more on the dramatic, procedural side? As always, CBS has your back. Created by Jonathan Nolan and starring Michael Emerson, this drama follows a mysterious billionaire computer programmer who has created a program that can predict who will commit a terrorist attack. Can he save the world in time with the help of authorities?
'Supernatural'
If you’re for weirder watches, this CW cult classic is a perfect binge to start. Starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, this fantasy horror series has a little bit of everything — comedy, great music, and real emotional stakes. The only thing it doesn’t really have are graphic sex scenes, which for the purposes of this list, is a huge bonus.
'Frasier'
What this classic comedy lacks in steamy scenes it more than makes up for in sharp wit. Frasier, Niles, and Daphne will leave you laughing and feeling more intelligent, but it won’t make you cringe in front of your grandparents.
'White Collar'
Just because a show doesn’t have sex doesn’t mean it can’t have sex appeal. That’s one of the main draws for Matt Bomer’s USA drama, White Collar. The series follows a highly intelligent con artist who is forced to help authorities take down white collar criminals. It’s a story of mental gymnastics everyone can enjoy.
'The IT Crowd'
What’s less sexy than a bunch of nerds working in IT? Not only is that essentially the plot of this British sitcom, but it’s also a true description of this show. Starring Chris O’Dowd, Richard Ayoade, and Katherine Parkinson, The IT Crowd is a hysterically funny watch you can enjoy with your family without worrying.
