Tina Fey On Hollywood Sexual Abuse Scandal: ‘We Never Made Anyone Who Worked For Us Look At Our Genitals’

Tina Fey and Robert Carlock were presented with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence during last night’s Writers Guild Awards ceremony. Named after the legendary writer and television producer of the same name, the award is given to writers who embody the spirit, commitment, and comic genius of Mr. Sargent, as well as his dedication to mentoring new writers. The long-time comedy duo, who’ve worked together on sitcom favorites like 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and NBC’s Great Newsaccepted the honor from a few familiar faces: former SNL and 30 Rock stars Tracy Morgan and Rachel Dratch.

Fey and Carlock’s acceptance speech was filled with the type of humor you’ve grown to expect from the acclaimed scribes, but Fey also referenced the wave of sexual abuse that’s been recently reported within the entertainment industry.

“If you have a meeting with Robert, when you get there he will never be just getting out of the shower,” Fey remarked. “That is just how low the bar is now. We never made anyone who worked for us look at our genitals.”

During their speech, the pair also joked about having to “contractually thank Lorne Michaels” (Fey and Carlock first met as writers on SNL) before Fey joked about her transition from writer to on-camera talent.

“I had my teeth fixed, I had people shoot lasers at my face, and I did so many squats. Now, like Lady Bird right near the end, I understand this room will always be the best part of me.”

The two also expressed a sliver of sentimentality, albeit in comedic fashion. Carlock praised his collaborator joking that Tina should “be on a postage stamp and not just because that would mean she’s dead,” before adding that he feels “lucky” to have the opportunity to work with her.

You can binge the duo’s current sitcom, Great News, on Hulu.
