Afternoon Delight: ‘Small Town Hackers’ Is The Australian Crime Comedy You’ve Been Waiting For

What better way to prepare for the fast-approaching weekend than by indulging in the some of the Internet’s most well-done web content? Take advantage of your lunch break and treat yourself to Afternoon Delight, Decider’s carefully curated picks of the best short-form content available on the world wide web. This week we’re spotlighting Small Town Hackers, an Australian web series commissioned by the comedy crew over at Above Average.

If you think you know how murder mysteries go, allow Small Town Hackers to blow your mind. Created by Mad Kids team Henry Inglis and Matt Lovkis and produced by Lauren Elliott, the series follows Alex (Tim Watts), who returns to his hometown Durran upon learning that his high school sweetheart Lucy Boddington died tragically in what appears to be a savage snapping turtle incident. He soon discovers that the police are lying and enlists the help of his ridiculous younger brother Devon (Sam Campbell) and Devon’s eccentric team of budding hackers to help him discover the truth.

We won’t give too much away here, but what ensues is simultaneously entertaining and uproarious. The cast boasts a totally compelling chemistry, and Campbell in particular wins some of the biggest laughs here – his timing and delivery are unfailingly funny, from his deadpan expressions to his full commitment to physical comedy. The rest of the cast fill their roles incredibly well, bouncing the one-liners off one another in gut-busting fashion and ensuring that you’ll never get bored.

With its top-notch production value, talented cast, and sharp writing, Small Town Hackers stands apart from the mediocre web series that largely clutter the landscape nowadays. It’s rife with all the twists and turns you’re used to seeing on your favorite crime series, but within moments, manages to subvert expectations and achieve total hilarity.
