‘The Babysitter’ on Netflix: French Kissing Turns Deadly In The First Trailer For This Horror-Comedy

A satanic cult meets spin-the-bottle in the trailer for Netflix’s The Babysitter, directed McG (Charlie’s Angels) and starring Samara Weaving and Bella Thorne. The high-school comedy-horror film revolves around a sweet 12-year old boy Cole (Judah Lewis) in love with his babysitter Allison (Thorne). When Cole stays up to spy on Allison and her friends playing a hot-and-heavy game of spin-the-bottle his eyes light up with excitement.

Things take a violent turn as french kissing descends into stabbing with blood splatter that erupts like a fountain, covering one bystander who starts freaking out about getting a STD. The first moment of violence captures the comedic tone of the film, which has fun playing with the teen movie stereotypes of hot, shallow high schoolers. The 80s high school movie troupes being hit home even further with the trailer set to the pop classic “Tainted Love.”

The jokes are taken to the next level with the crew’s brilliant idea of videoing a human sacrifice because it would go viral on social media. “People have always done human sacrifice,” says one character unimpressed with the idea. “Yeah, but not in America with hot people,” retorts the stereotypical, gum-smacking cheerleader.

The film keeps it’s foot firmly planted in irony, but without forgetting the horror. When the clique/cult discovers Cole is spying on them they stop at nothing to keep him quiet, as the action heats up and the lighting turns noir.

It’s the first movie directed by McG since 3 Days to Kill in 2014, as the Charlie’s Angels director has been more focused on his career as a TV producer (Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments and Lethal Weapon). According to Variety, The Babysitter was financed by McG’s Wonderland Sound and Vision. After production, the film was acquired by Netfix from Newline for big money – high-seven to low-eight-dollar range.

The film will be available to Netflix subscribers on Friday the 13th of October.
