When Is ‘Ozark’ Season 2 Coming Out?

If you’re up-to-date with your crime drama must-watches, there’s a good chance you’ve already binged Netflix’s latest series, Ozark. Starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, the 10-episode first season is packed with murder, deception, intrigue, and moody blue lighting. It turns out you can make almost any criminal activity into great TV, even money laundering.

Ozark follows Marty Byrd (Bateman), a financial advisor with seedy connections who is forced to uproot his family and move to the Ozarks in Missouri. Once there, he and his wife Wendy (Laura Linney) have to clean up millions of dollars all while dodging the cops, local criminals, and crazy water pastors. It’s a roller coaster drama that rarely if ever lets up. We know you have questions about the show’s future, and we’re here to help. Here’s everything we know about Ozark Season 2.

Will there be a Season 2 of Ozark?

Yes there will! On August 15, Netflix officially renewed the series for a second season. Jason Bateman has some serious plans for this show. “There’s not some obnoxious cliffhanger,” Bateman said in an interview with Indiewire. “I’m really, really proud of [showrunner] Chris [Mundy] and his staff; the way that they chose to wrap everything up in a pretty subtle way.”

Regarding his plans for Season 2, Bateman teased the possibility that Marty (Bateman) may be working more closely with the Snells (Peter Mullan and Lisa Emery) and Ruth (Julia Garner). He also pointed out that as the series progresses, Marty will have to wash more money, which will naturally raise the stakes. “He might spend a little time up in St. Louis or Kansas City in pursuing some of these bigger deals that he’s going to need to accomplish to get this bigger number washed,” he said.

How many seasons will Ozark be?

If the showrunners have their way, Ozark could last as long as five seasons. There’s a lot of money that needs to be laundered, and Jason Bateman and Laura Linney are in it for the long haul.

Why did it take Netflix so long to renew Ozark?

Though Ozark was released in late July, Netflix didn’t announce the show’s renewal until mid August — a surprising move for a streaming service that’s been known to give renewals before seasons premiere. Why did Netflix wait so long? There’s no clear answer to this question for obvious reasons (Netflix has been historically quiet about its renewal process), but it likely reflects the new side of Netflix we’ve been seeing lately.

As earlier as last year it seemed as though every Netflix Original was guaranteed at least a second season. However, following the cancellations of The Get Down, Bloodline, Girlboss, and Sense8, Netflix has shown a more cautious side to its greenlighting process. Chances are, Netflix was examining whatever algorithm of critical praise and viewership numbers it relies on before announcing the future of Ozark. However, now that we have a show confirmation, based on Netflix Originals trends, we’ll likely see Season 2 sometime next summer.
