Slow clap for late night television. Last night, Kellyanne Conway, the senior advisor for the Trump campaign and the recently appointed Counselor to the President, made an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. It was a big interview get for Late Night, and Seth Meyers didn’t back down, using his opportunity to confront Conway about the recently released reports that claim Russia has compromising information on president-elect Donald Trump.

Mere hours before the interview aired, CNN released a report, saying that last week intelligence officials had briefed President Obama and president-elect Trump on unconfirmed allegations about Russia. According to the report, Russia has compromising personal and financial information on Trump. After a series of awkward pleasantries and veiled jabs from Meyers, the late night host dove into the news, asking Conway is she could “confirm or comment on the fact that the intelligence community has presented” the classified reports to Trump. What followed was a display of verbal acrobatics Conway is known for. However, to Meyers credit, he rarely let up. He didn’t receive a direct answer from Conway, but he certainly tried.

At one point, Meyers expressed his concern that the president-elect may be uninterested in Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election. Conway assured Meyers that Trump takes many intelligence meetings every day before adding that he was “curious enough to figure out America” and changing the subject.

“That’s a pivot, right there,” a smiling Meyers replied, pointing at Conway. They both then joked about how no one pivots better.

Conway’s appearance on Late Night is a surprising one. It’s fairly safe to say that all of late night television is and was heavily critical of Trump, but few shows were more barbed than Late Night. Likely a major reason why the talk show was able to land the interview is because both Meyers’ show and The Celebrity Apprentice are on NBC, a fact Conway alluded to in her interview. However, even with a network parent in common, seeing Conway on the show is shocking. Early on, Meyers asked Conway if she thought Trump was watching, to which she responded “I hope so. He’ll watch at some point … We’re fans.”

Meyers smiled as he replied: “I don’t know if we are fans.”

Meyers then ended the interview by betting Conway the American people wouldn’t see Trump’s tax returns for the next four years, a bet Conway avoided agreeing to. This isn’t Jimmy Fallon, folks.
