The Divergent Series: Allegiant

Powered by Reelgood

This week we will be greeted by the release of the latest film in the Underworld series, Blood Wars, and we’ve been geeking out about it since we caught up with the cast at New York Comic-Con this past fall. Obviously we’re psyched to see Kate Beckinsale kicking supernatural ass, but it’s her right-hand man played by Theo James that we can’t take our eyes off of. Luckily, we never have to.

Besides Underworld (he’s in Awakening and Blood Wars), Theo is best known for playing Tobias “Four” Eaton in the Divergent series films. But don’t be too quick to just label him as just another action hunk. I mean, he is very hunky, don’t get that twisted. But he’s a more talented and diverse actor than most people realize at this stage in his career. He’s become a highly sought-after actor due to some of his recent high-profile roles and entrancing on-screen presence.

Let’s have a Meet Queue with Theo, shall we?

Downton Abbey (2010)

One of Theo’s first major roles was that of Kemal Pamuk in the first season of Downton Abbey. Season one might feel like a long time ago, but his storyline was about as memorable as it gets. After having sex with Lady Mary, Pamuk DIES. Of orgasm, maybe! It was a short but effective time on the PBS drama, and a role that he is continually asked about. But damn, right?

Bedlam (2011)

Theo starred in the first season of the British supernatural drama Bedlam as Jed, a guy who possesses the ability to see the ghosts (and how they died) that occupy his current apartment building, which just happened to previously be a mental facility. Spooky!

Divergent (2014)

Shailene Woodley as Tris is the badass heroine we need and love in Divergent, but it is Theo’s Four that not only grounds the films, but gives them the heart, romance, and stakes that keep things exciting and moving along. Seeing him go from steely stud to benevolent boyfriend is what hooks viewers by the heart and keeps them invested in the dystopian story. Divergent and its two follow-ups, Insurgent and Allegiant, allow for Theo’s character to remain cool, calm, collected, while also fighting for his life in defending his girlfriend, all while facing his mommy and daddy issues head-on. It’s a more complex role than one might expect from a popular YA book series turned movies, but he more than rises to the occasion in an ensemble cast that also includes Jai Courtney, Ansel Elgort, Naomi Watts, and Miles Teller.

The Benefactor (2015)

As Dakota Fanning’s husband Luke, Theo stars as a man who must set boundaries for his wife’s overly generous family friend, Franny (Richard Gere) in The Benefactor. There’s no futuristic, otherworldly setting here, so Theo gets to don both doctor scrubs and a fancy tux as he tries to figure out what Franny’s deal is and how he can get him to back off. Theo does get a chance here to show off that aggression we’ve seen from him on screen, but this time in a modern day setting, and with the balance of being a loving husband as well. The film gives him the opportunity to be both serious and sensitive, all while holding his own opposite Gere.
