The 10 Funniest Shows About Sex

I think that we can all agree that sex is a pretty weird thing. There are so many shows and movies out there that show us the steamy and romantic side of sex and relationships, but those picture perfect couples seem more mocking than aspirational when your own love life is a train wreck. It’s during dark moments like these that we need comedy.

If our dramas and romances take sex to unparalleled highs, our comedies take the subject to unparalleled lows. From dates with actual trolls and tongue in cheek call girls to desperate virgins and STDs, there are a ton of great shows out there to make your own love life (or lack of one) seem more manageable. To help you through the horror that is dating and relationships, here are 10 of the best comedies about sex you can laugh at right now.

'Sex and the City'

Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha paved the way for shows directly about the complexities of sex and relationships, and for that we thank them. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, and Kim Cattrall, the six season series focused on four women trying to navigate the intimidating dating waters of New York City. Slow clap for a group of ladies who were able to get laid and find love without Tinder.

'Casual'

For a show almost completely about sex, there are very few sex scenes in this dramatic-leaning Hulu Original. Starring Michaela Watkins, Tommy Dewey, and Tara Lynne Barr, Casual follows a recently divorced mother who is forced to re-enter the dating scene and learn the meaning of casual sex. It’s a show less about sex itself and more about how changing views of sex and romance affect long-standing relationships. Valerie, Alex, and Laura may be messed up, but at least they have each other.

'Chewing Gum'

No matter how horrifyingly embarrassing your sex life is, Michaela Coel likely has you beat. Written by and starring Coel, Chewing Gum follows Tracey, a 24-year-old, highly religious shop assistant who will stop at nothing to lose her virginity. Tracey never backs down from declaring what she wants, though she rarely knows what that thing is. There’s nose sucking, awkward grinding, nosebleeds, and likely the worst dirty talk you’ve ever heard in your life.

'Man Seeking Woman'

Dating is really, really weird. That’s the premise this FX comedy takes to its most absurd extremes. Starring Jay Baruchel, Britt Lower, and Eric Andre, Man Seeking Woman gleefully illustrates the most annoying parts of relationships through its own insane lens. People are literally flung left or right depending on how you swipe the on Tinder. Storm clouds form out of nowhere every time a break up happens. It’s possible to date Santa Claus. There are no limits, which is what makes this watch so amazing.

'Insecure'

Issa Rae’s sitcom adaptation of Awkward Black Girl is about a lot of things — the frustrations of the workplace, race, friendship, relationships — but as the series goes on, it’s becoming more and more clear that this is a series largely about sex. Issa (Rae) and Molly’s (Yvonne Orji) best friendship holds the series together, and the duo is at their most fun when they’re gossiping or dishing about, um, performance. Insecure takes a funny and smartly authentic look at the awkwardness of relationships, but the show’s steamy sex scenes are anything but awkward. Don’t watch at work.

'Lovesick' / 'Scrotal Recall'

There are few things more devastating than having to tell everyone you’ve ever slept with that you may have given them an STD. That’s the premise of this British comedy, and Dylan (singer and songwriter Johnny Flynn) is our fearless leader. Formally called Scrotal Recall, Lovesick follows Dylan and his friends as our protagonist painstakingly goes back through his little black book. It’s often tough to watch, but they say humor comes from pain, right?

'Easy'

easy-4

Created by Joe Swanberg, Easy follows eight couples in Chicago as they figure out their relationships and get down and dirty. Falling in line with Swanberg’s style, each self-contained story offers a snapshot of a group of people’s sex lives, proving just how messy and interesting this topic is. Filled with big names like Orlando Bloom, Hannibal Buress, Aya CashMarc Maron, and Gugu-Mbatha Raw, this sweet series is the perfect after work binge.

'Secret Diary of a Call Girl'

Though this British series is technically a drama, Secret Diary of a Call Girl’s winking portrayal of sex and the sex worker industry is funny enough to watch as a sex comedy. Starring Billie Piper (Doctor Who), the series follows Hannah Baxter (Piper), a seemingly normal woman who actually lives as a call girl under the name Belle. When Belle isn’t dealing with her borderline insane clients, she’s hiding her secret working life from everyone she knows, making this an all around fun watch.

Sometimes sex leads to a baby, even when you weren’t expecting it. That’s the reality this Amazon Original explores when a one night stand between an Irish schoolteacher and a visiting American leads to two people’s lives changing dramatically. Starring Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney, this funny sitcom about settling down in the wrong order should help your own life feel more stable.

'Please Like Me'

Technically this Australian comedy is more about exploring sexuality rather than sex, but Josh Thomas is so awkward and relatable when it comes to his dealings with the same sex (or any sex really), the series more than earns a spot on this list. The series revolves around Josh, man insecure and in his 20s who stumbles onto his sexual preference the same way he stumbles through life. After watching one episode of this charming series, it’s impossible not to fall in love.
