Lady Gaga pretty much took over The Late Late Show with James Corden on Tuesday night. Hey, when you’ve got a brand new album like Joanne to promote, you do what you have to do. So Gaga got all up in that Carpool Karaoke gig (whereupon we were all re-introduced to the glory of O-Town’s “Liquid Dreams”), shoved Corden aside to do his monologue, and essentially lurked around for the rest of the show. If the goal was to give me the impression that Lady Gaga would make for a fairly exciting talk-show host, well, mission accomplished.
Later in the show, Corden welcomed Matt LeBlanc to the couch to promote his new CBS sitcom Man with a Plan, but Gaga — who was sitting in with Reggie Watts and the bad — was waiting with a sniper question: she asked the former Friends star who he would rather: Monica or Rachel.
It’s an important question! Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Monica (Courteney Cox) were of course the female leads on Friends, and no matter how many Man with a Plans LeBlanc makes, he’s always going to be remembered best for Friends. Of course, what Gaga may or may not know is that LeBlanc’s Joey was already asked this question on Friends, that one time when Phoebe introduced him to the trick of answering rapid-fire questions without thinking in order to discern his true feelings:
So Monica was the surprise winner of that round. Of course, in the years following that scene, Joey fell in love with Rachel, in a plot that divides Friends fans to this day. So would LeBlanc honor that history with his answer?
Ooooh, a twist! Normally, we’d ding LeBlanc for offering a cop-out answer, but he wins all the brownie points because, in choosing Phoebe, he cited that she’s “very bendy.”
