How To Get Away With Murder had its jaw-dropping mid-season finale last night. The show has been dazzling us all season with its addictive twists and turns. After last night’s mid-season premiere, though, it feels like we know a lot more about what’s going on, and yet, we also kind of know less. We found out what exactly went down at Annalise’s house, we found out exactly who killed Sam and we found out that Annalise (Viola Davis) might know more about her husband’s murder than we ever thought possible.

***SPOILERS AHOY!***

We’ve known since the series premiere that four of the Keating Five (Wes, Connor, Laurel, and Michaela) are responsible for the murder of Sam, Annalise’s shady husband. Over time, we learned that Rebecca is also involved and that Wes is secretly manipulating the rest of the gang in small, subtle ways. However, we didn’t know until last night exactly what went down at Chez Keating on the night of the bonfire. Well, now we do. Sort of.

After Annalise confronts Sam about Lila’s pregnancy, she storms off and he stays home to get drunk. Rebecca sneaks into the house to steal private intel off Sam’s computer. Michaela is there to return the stolen trophy, and Wes, Connor, and Laurel arrive to try to stop Rebecca. Sam catches Rebecca and soon flies into a rage. He starts wrestling Rebecca in an effort to get her USB drive. As things get more and more physical, Wes, Connor, Laurel, and Michaela get involved. Laurel gets the USB drive and runs away, Sam in hot pursuit.

Now, here’s where it gets tricky. Michaela instinctively — and accidentally — pushes Sam over the bannister to save Laurel. He falls, there’s a crunch, and the law students all freak out because they think he’s dead. Connor tries to wash his hands of the crime, but Laurel points out that since they were helping Rebecca get away with stolen private intel, they are all implicated in a felony. While they are arguing legal and moral semantics, Sam pops back to life and tries to strangle Rebecca to death. Wes, who is obviously head over heels for the townie, grabs the trophy and whacks Sam upside the head with it.

Rebecca’s face is splattered with blood as Sam falls to the ground in a dead thump.

Wes is the one who murdered Sam.

But that’s not all!

At the very end of the episode, after it seems that we are completely caught up with all the twists and turns that led up to Sam’s murder, we get one more shocker. There’s one final scene where a distraught Annalise asks the Keating Five to be as honest and open in the investigation for her missing husband as possible. We then see Wes give her one of those “knowing looks” that people who share secrets give each other. Then we flashback to the night before. A remorseful Wes returns to Annalise’s house alone, after the murder, and tells Sam’s dead body that he’s sorry. And then, we hear Annalise say, “Don’t be.” The camera pans. Annalise is in the office, sitting behind her desk, surveying the scene of her husband’s bloody, lifeless body like a vengeful goddess.

Annalise knows! Annalise is happy Sam is dead! Annalise and Wes might be in cahoots!!! I got to use the word ‘cahoots’ in a blog post in 2014!!!

How much does Annalise actually know? How deeply intwined are she and Wes? And do we really know who killed Lila Stangard? We’ll have to wait until How To Get Away With Murder returns on Thursday, January 29. [Watch How To Get Away With Murder]
