10 Movies That Are Safe To Stream With Your Grandparents

Celebrate Senior Citizens Day with the folks who made the folks who made you — your grandparents! Sometimes it can be daunting to suggest what to watch during your time together and, before you know it, you’re stuck with QVC or C-SPAN — blergh! Instead, surprise them with something that brings them back in time and will keep you entertained, too. Here are some classic flicks that will please your Greatest Generation family members, ranked from safest to slightly inappropriate.

1

'All About Eve'

This is not only a totally safe pick with no awkward “I’m going to go grab something from the kitchen” moments, but it’s also a perfect movie for bringing generations old and new together. Margo Channing is an aging star and Eve Harrington is the next big thing, but she has a thing or two to learn, just like we do from the elders in our lives. Plus, Bette Davis is a hit with just about everyone over the age of sixty. [GoWatchIt]

'The Muppet Movie'

“The Rainbow Connection” will bring everyone together and it’s undeniable fact that old ladies simply adore Miss Piggy. Your grandparents might have very well been the ones to show you this movie in the first place, so this is the perfect opportunity to revisit it together. [GoWatchIt]

'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'

This is great to stream with both your grandma and grandpa not just because everyone in this movie is easy on the eyes, but also because they can reminisce about “what a looker Robert Redford used to be” and “how sad it is Paul Newman is dead.” Plus, films that are based on actual events are always great for “Back in the day…” stories. 'Charade'

Charade is the best, most underrated Audrey Hepburn movie of her entire filmography. How do I know this? My grandma popped this into the VHS player when I was a wee tyke and it opened my eyes to a whole knew world of Hepburn. Charade is a great pick because it’s a crime thriller mixed with classic screwball comedy. Audrey plays Reggie Lampert, a widow whose being targeted by hit men for her late husband’s fortune. The charming Peter Joshua (Cary Grant) claims he can help her, but should she trust him? 'Miss Congeniality'

For reasons unknown, old women not only love Sandra Bullock, but they love it even more when Sandy is kicking ass and taking names. I first saw Miss Congeniality with my grandmother and I’ll never forget how excited she was when Sandy held a gun to Michael Caine’s head for a doughnut. It’s the perfect bonding movie, although be prepared for questioning about your love life when the storyline shifts a little and it starts to be become obvious Sandy wants Benjamin Bratt to smooooch her. [GoWatchIt]

'Zulu'

Nothing will make your grandpa prouder than suggesting this classic war movie. Seriously, he’ll be blown away by this suggestion and proud he made you in-part. Starring a super young Michael Caine, Zulu recounts the battle at Rorke’s Drift between the Brits and the Zulu warriors during the Anglo-Zulu War of South Africa. Even if war movies aren’t your thing, for some reason you can’t peel away from this one, plus it’s a cool history lesson. [GoWatchIt]

'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly'

Everybody loves Clint. Bottom line. End of story. Furthermore, every old person loves Eli Wallach, who plays the ultimate villain in this Spaghetti Western from director Sergio Leone. This will undoubtedly spark conversation about what a force Clint was in his prime and how they “just don’t make ’em like this anymore,” both referring to the movie and Eastwood. [GoWatchIt]

8

'Annie Hall'

The only fiercely loyal Woody Allen fans are old people. They wave off the scandals and rumors as petty gossip when Annie Hall comes on. It’s a tale of lust and love on the Upper East Side and you’ll get to hear all about how Diane Keaton changed the fashion landscape that year by sporting her slacks and ties in this movie (even though you probably already knew this). 'The Seven Year Itch'

If you’ve never seen this Marilyn Monroe classic, definitely wait ’til you can see it with your grandparents. Here’s the low-down so you can impress them when you put it on: Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell) is a miserable dude who’s only miserable because he’s been married for seven years and he’s “itching” to get some from someone who isn’t his wife. Enter Marilyn Monroe as the lusty neighbor who can scratch that itch. What’s hilarious about the whore dichotomy in this movie is that Monroe’s character, “The Girl” is made out to be the protagonist though she’s going after a married man. Oh, the ’50s. [GoWatchIt]

'The Graduate'

There’s nothing like spending quality time with your grandparents while listening to them quote innocently inappropriate lines from a movie about a dude who’s sought after by a mother and her daughter. You’ll get to hear all about how they saw this “at the movie house” and it was “simply shocking” at the time. If your grandparents are a little more with it, definitely stream this classic together.
